According the the Final Fantasy Team(not sure exactly who said it), Every FF world has its own Lifestream. I thought about this, and if you use look at the other games with that in mind, you start to notice some things. For example, in FF1 the Four Fiends are draining the energy of the four Crystals, which are said to represent the elements of the planet. If the Lifestream statement is true, then the Four Fiends are actually draining that world's Lifestream! What's more, they are sending it two thousand years in the past so that Garland can absorb it and become the incarnation of Chaos. Put into this context, Garland and Sephiroth are remarkably similar. FF2 doesn't have any evidence of a Lifestream. In FF3 the Crystals are not only manifestations of the planet's energy, but also the "voice" of the planet, speaking directly to the characters on multiple occasions. FF4 also does not have any Lifestream evidence. FF5 once again features the Crystals in their traditional role, and they are also shown to have some will of their own.
Now here's where it gets a bit vague. 6, at first glance, appears to have nothing to support the Lifestream theory. To find the evidence we must delve deep into the game's events and make a few assumptions. The first is that the Three Goddesses are NOT goddesses, but are in fact humans who have tapped into the Lifestream of the World of Balance. This would explain the Ruin, which under this theory would be the result of an imbalance of the Lifestream. This is the second assumption, and one that may not hold much water. Kefka then becomes almost EXACTLY like Sephiroth, as he is a genetically altered human who rebels against his creators and attempts to harness the planet's energy to become a god.
FF7 is self explanatory, as the Lifestream figures directly into the story, with the Planet itself becoming a central character. FF8's got nothing, and Gaia(the world of FF9) is directly stated to have a Lifestream, known in-game as the Cycle of Souls.
Well, that's all I've got for now. Feel free to discuss, and post any other evidence you might find.
UPDATE: I happened to catch The Spirits Within last night, and it has the most blatant Lifestream since VII. Called "Gaia" in the film, it fits the Lifestream archetype exactly. Just one more piece of evidence! Also, I think the Mist in XII may be a form of Lifestream, but I can't say for certain.
